Happy New Year to all readers!
In the lazy days between Christmas and New Year, a very interesting package arrived, thanks to frequent pencil talk commenter futural.
The former Eberhard Faber company had a complicated global footprint. We see that in the patchwork ownership of the name today. We also know the Mongol remains a popular pencil brand in the Phillipines.
Some news – the Eberhard Faber Mongol 482 pencil also lives on in Colombia! Produced by “Eberhard Faber de Colombia” (no references to Sanford or Newell-Rubbermaid on the packaging), futural tells me that the bar code reveals a Peruvian origin. How interesting – Woodchuck from CalCedar has said the Mongol has been made in Venezuela, and more recently by Marco in China.
Whatever the details, the Colombian Mongol definitely appears to be different than the modern Philippine Mongols.
The finish consists of a basic thin lacquer. The leads also seem somewhat smoother than the Amspec version. The eraser even works fairly well. All in all, a very acceptable pencil.
These aren’t the only Colombian pencils that arrived! Stay tuned for more.

I wish that some of these Colombian Mongols could be purchased in the US!
Interesting.
Just FYI, the nationality of a barcode does not necessarily have anything to do whatsoever with the country of origin of the product it is applied to. A pencil could easily be made in China, have an Ecuadorian barcode applied and be sold in Germany :-)
The “MONGOL” lettering looks interesting – the characters seem to hover.
Happy New Year you too!
I like the nice 70ties retro look packaging.
The Eberhard Faber Mongol trademark in Columbia is now owned by the Peruvian company Lapices y Conexos S.A. (LayConsa) which has controlled the rights to the Mongol brand in Peru for many years. LayConsa acquired these rights a few years ago when they purchased the remaining assets of Industria Columbiana de Lapices S.A. which was located in Cali. The Cali location had been shut down for some years. These pencils are being produced in LayConsa’s factory in Arequipa, Peru. Thus the Eberhard Faber de Columbia simply represents the marketing entity LayConsa has established in that market.
The Newell Sanford operation in Bogota, Columbia was originally established by Berol and as such never had the rights to Mongol as Berol produced the Mirado. This Bogota facility has produced primarily color pencils, most notably the Prismacolor brand. Unfortunately, in November Newell announced the closure of their Columbia production operations by year end 2010 and are in fact in wind down operations there now and will only have sales and distribution facilities in Columbia going forward. Newell’s supply for the Columbia market will now be taken up by their Mexicali, Mexico facility and Asian based purchases from OEM suppliers. Unfortunately, this means Columbia is now the next Latin American country to cease having a domestic base of pencil manufacturing. I had planned to post about this development on Timberlines, but prefer not to do such posts too promptly following the news given our company’s status as a supplier.
Great photos! I’m glad these pencils live on, in whatever form they take.
They are nice looking
All, thank you for the comments.
A special thank you to WoodChuck for the detailed account of Lapices y Conexos S.A. and Newell Colombia.
These are so fun and retro-looking. Makes me want to take a standardized test.
Please spell Colombia, South America-correctly.
